A Fearless Author Daring to Compare Jack Bauer and Harry Potter

Thursday, August 23rd, 2007

A fearless author Adam Hoff tries to compare Jack Bauer of 24 and Harry Potter. This is an outrageous insult to Jack Bauer, unbelivable.Mr. Hoff states in this blog “However, one of the good things to come out of my daily ponderings of 24 is that I’ve stumbled on a striking similarity between Jack Bauer, CTU Agent extraordinaire, and Harry Potter, boy wizard. This may seem like an odd pairing, but just check out the evidence.”

Here are the striking similarities between a world class hero and that stupid boy. How dare one can mention the two in the same article :)

Algorithmic Problem Solving

Tuesday, August 21st, 2007

Book Excerpts:

In historical terms, the digital computer is very, very new. The science of computing is yet newer. Compared to its older sister – mathematics – which is thousands of years old, it is hardly in the embryonic stage of development. Yet, computing science is already having a major influence on our problem-solving skills, amounting to a revolution in the art of effective reasoning.

Because of the challenges of programming (which means instructing a dumb machine how to solve each instance of a problem) and the unprecedented scale of programming problems, computing scientists have had to hone their problem-solving skills to a very fine degree. This has led to advances in logic, and to changes in the way that mathematics is practised. This book forms an introduction to problem-solving using the insights that have been gained in computing science.

Computer Quotes

Sunday, March 8th, 2009

I came across some interesting “computer qoutes” on http://www.brainyquote.com. Couldn’t help it but post a few here.

A computer once beat me at chess, but it was no match for me at kick boxing.
Emo Philips

Computers make it easier to do a lot of things, but most of the things they make it easier to do don’t need to be done.
Andy Rooney

The good news about computers is that they do what you tell them to do. The bad news is that they do what you tell them to do.
Ted Nelson

The real danger is not that computers will begin to think like men, but that men will begin to think like computers.
Sydney J. Harris

Why is it drug addicts and computer afficionados are both called users?
Clifford Stoll

Deming’s 14 points

Sunday, March 22nd, 2009

So true !

  • Create constancy of purpose.
  • Adopt the new philosophy.
  • Cease dependence on mass inspection to achieve quality.
  • Minimize total cost, not initial price of supplies.
  • Improve constantly the system of production and service.
  • Institute training on the job.
  • Institute leadership.
  • Drive out fear.
  • Break down barriers between departments.
  • Eliminate slogans, exhortations, and numerical targets.
  • Eliminate work standards (quotas) and management by objective.
  • Remove barriers that rob workers, engineers, and managers of their right to pride of workmanship.
  • Institute a vigorous program of education and self-improvement.
  • Put everyone in the company to work to accomplish the transformation.

The points were first presented in William Edwards Deming’s (October 14, 1900 – December 20, 1993) book Out of the Crisis (1986)

Four C’s of Innovation

Saturday, October 20th, 2007

Just some thing flashed on my mind the other day.

  • Creation
  • Creativity
  • Chaos
  • Compliance

Don’t you think, almost anything you can think of goes through those phases?
